Description

SJ 99 NW 4/89

DROYLSDEN LUMB LANE (north-west side) Cinderland Hall Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse, part of which is now an outbuilding. Timber- framed structure of C16 and C17 partly rendered and encased in brick work of C18 and C19. Graduated stone slate and corrugated asbestos roof. 3-unit cross-passage plan, the service end to left of cross-passage having been largely rebuilt, the house-part (at one time an open hall) now on 2 storeys and a 2-storey crosswing to right. Total of 4 bays. Gabled porch. C19 and C20 windows, 2 of which are tripartite sashes and one sash which replaces an earlier fire window. Gabled crosswing to right projects; render conceals the timber frame. Outshut to rear hides the timber frame which is 3-panels high and is diagonally braced. 2 brick chimney stacks. Interior: Immediately left of cross- passage is a cruck truss incorporating 3 Tudor-arched doors (now blocked) below the tie beam. The central one is taller than the other two. Large inglenook to house part. Chamfered beams. Crosswing said to contain some concealed elaborately carved timberwork. The house has an interesting and complicated history, the timber-framing being particularly noteworthy. W. Bowman, England in Ashton-under-Lyne, 1960.
