Description
Flowery Field Church (Free Christian) is a church built in 1878 by Thomas Worthington. It is constructed of snecked stone and features a slate roof. The building has a wide nave with an east gallery, galleried transepts, a south-east tower, and a polygonal chancel. The nave consists of three bays, each bay featuring a projecting plinth, weathered buttress, a continuous sill band, and a three-light flat-headed mullion and transom window with arched lights and a hoodmould. The gables are coped with kneelers and cross finials. The three-stage tower has angled buttresses, a corner stair turret, and two-light windows with Perpendicular tracery on the west and transepts. Conically-roofed stair towers flank the transepts.
Inside, there is a triple chancel arch with piers that have attached columns. The roof features cambered tie-beam trusses with enriched braces and arcading, along with a panelled timber ceiling. Other notable timberwork includes the organ, galleries, pulpit, screens, and pews, as well as stained glass windows.
The church was built by local mill owner Thomas Ashton for the use of his employees for worship, regardless of their creed. The tower bears an inscription that reads: "To the Worship of God by a Congregation bound by no Creeds or Confessions of Faith, who under the guidance of Ministers equally free to follow Truth, humbly strive to love God and to serve their Fellowmen. This Church is dedicated by Thomas Ashton of Hyde and Elizabeth, his wife. A.D. MDCCCLXXVIII."
