Description

Hyde Chapel is a Unitarian church built between 1846 and 1848 by architects Bowman and Crowther. Constructed from snecked stone with a slate roof, the chapel features a nave with a clerestory, aisles, a west tower, and a chancel with a vestry. Its design and layout closely resemble those of a parish church. The exterior includes a weathered plinth, a sill band, coped gables, and cross finials. The 6-bay nave and aisles, along with the 2-bay chancel, are supported by weathered buttresses that are angled at the corners. Each bay contains 2-light windows adorned with geometrical tracery and hoodmoulds, and there is a porch located in the second bay. The clerestory has paired lancet windows. The 4-stage tower features angled weathered buttresses, an octagonal stair turret, a 3-light west window, paired 2-light belfry openings, and a broach spire with lucarnes.

Inside, the nave arcade is supported by clustered columns with moulded bases and capitals. The roof is a hammer-beam style with braced purlins. Notable interior elements include a carved timber pulpit, a font cover, and a west organ, along with a stone altar table on columns with foliated capitals, all richly decorated with stencilled designs. There is also a memorial plaque dedicated to Lord Ashton of Hyde. Hyde Chapel is recognized as a fine example of its type and is noted to be the first Nonconformist building modeled after a structure for the Established Church.
