Description

The Church of St George is a church built between 1831 and 1832 by T. and C. Atkinson for the Church Commissioners. It is constructed from watershot dressed stone and features a slate roof. The church has a three-sided gallery plan with a central west tower. The seven-bay aisles share the same roof as the nave and are distinguished by a stone plinth, a coped parapet, and tall windows with four-centred arches and hoodmoulds. The corners of the building, as well as those of the small chancel bay, are marked by octagonal piers and bold pinnacles. The east window has five lights and rectilinear tracery, while the south aisle includes a wall-mounted sundial.

The tower is an imposing three-stage structure featuring a four-centred arch door, a four-light west window, clock faces, a transomed two-light belfry window, a coped parapet, and octagonal corner columns topped with pinnacles. Similar doorways on either side of the tower provide access to the galleries.

Inside, the church was altered in 1885 when the central pulpit was removed, a pierced gallery rail and new seats were installed, and the organ was relocated. During this renovation, the tall arcade columns that support the gallery were changed from octagonal to circular. These columns have moulded bases, enriched octagonal capitals, and support four-centred arches. The interior also features a coved plaster ceiling and stained glass. The organ, made by S. Renn in 1838, is currently in temporary storage.
