Description
The Hat Maker's Workshop, located in the grounds of Number 54 on Joel Lane in Hyde, is an 18th-century building used for planking in the hat industry. It is constructed from watershot stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. This small, single-storey workshop has a brick addition on the left side. The front includes a door flanked by a window on either side, with the right window retaining its original glazing bars. There are two windows on the right gable and one window along with four small steam release windows at the rear. All windows are fitted with stone lintels and sills. The building has a gable chimney stack that features water tabling and an oversailing course. The hand-powered planking process utilized water from a nearby spring for steam block processing and for forming felt hats.
