Description
Brookfield Unitarian Church is a Unitarian church built between 1869 and 1871 by architect Thomas Worthington. The church is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble and features a slate roof in the Early English style. It comprises a nave, north and south aisles, and a free-standing steeple attached to the north aisle near the west end, along with a chancel that has transepts.
The church's four-stage tower includes angle-buttresses, string-courses, an embattled parapet with corner gargoyles, and a tall slender broach spire. The tower features a two-centred arched north doorway, one and two lancet windows on the next two stages, paired two-light belfry windows with cusped lights, and lucarnes at the base of the spire. The six-bay nave has three-light clerestory windows, while the buttressed aisles have two-centred arched two-light windows. The transepts of the chancel also have similar windows, and there are large east and west windows. The gable copings are adorned with kneelers and apex crosses.
Inside, the church features aisle arcades made of sandstone supported by columns of pink polished granite, and the walls are plastered. The church was commissioned and endowed by Richard Peacock, an engineer and partner in the locomotive-building firm of Beyer and Peacock, at a cost of £12,000. It reflects the ecumenical nature of later 19th-century Unitarianism.
