Description
The Broadbottom Arches Railway Viaduct is a railway viaduct built in 1842, designed by engineer C.B. Vignoles for the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne & Manchester Railway. It is constructed of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a total of 19 arches, including one skew arch (No. 3). The semi-circular brick arches are supported by square piers that have ashlar springing bands. The skew arch is made of rock-faced stone and includes rusticated voussoirs along with square flanking projections. Arches 7 to 11 are widened to the south using engineering brick. The parapet wall is adorned with an ashlar band and coping.
