Description
The Old School is a school building dating from 1858, as indicated on the datestone. It is constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has a T-shaped plan and consists of one storey plus a basement, designed in the Jacobean style. Notable architectural elements include a projecting plinth, stone quoins, and coped gables. The windows on each side are arranged in groups of 2, 4, and 6 lights, featuring chamfered stone mullions, hoodmoulds, and transoms in the two principal windows. The main entrance door has a chamfered surround with a Tudor-arched head, while the basement door is a re-used element that is considerably older. A ridge chimney stack is present, and a cusped panel in the gable reads "Scholam Grammatican, A.S. MDCXX Benivolentian Roberti Garsett Armig et Ricardi Willbraham Equit Fundatam. Metustate et Incuria Dilapsam Instaurarit Reposuit Restituit Geogius Woodhead Armig A.S. MDCCCLVIII". The building is included for its group value.
