Description
The cross at War Hill in Longdendale is a Grade II* listed structure with medieval origins, but it underwent significant restoration in 1760 and again in 1897. It is made of ashlar stone and features a stepped circular plinth that is inscribed with "Restored in commemoration of the sixtieth year of the reign of Queen Victoria 1897." The cross has an octagonal shaft that rests on a moulded base and is topped with a foliated capital. At the top, there is a cubical sundial with three copper faces. The front face of the sundial is inscribed with "hora pars vitae," while the rear face reads, "and watch and pray time hastes away when time is done eternity comes on."
