Description

This building is a block of cottages belonging to English Calico Limited, located on New Mills Station Road. It is a 17th-century stone house that has been subdivided into five cottages but was derelict at the time of the survey. The structure is made of coursed rubble with stone dressings and some brick patching, along with brick extensions. It features a stone slate roof. The main part of the building is two storeys high with two windows, flanked by outer cross wings, one of which has a stone-coped gable and kneelers. The building is three storeys tall with an attic. There are traces of 17th-century windows that have been filled in, but some timber lintels from earlier openings remain. The house was remodeled in the 18th century, during which a door with rusticated stone dressings was added to each gable; one door is round-arched, while the other has a flat lintel. There are hung sashes, some with moulded frames and most with glazing bars still intact. The building has a central chimney and additional brick chimneys. It is possibly the original Strines Hall, dating from around 1650.
