Description
The walls of the walled garden at Abney Hall were built in the 1850s, likely by the architects Travis and Mangnall. Constructed of Flemish bond brick with stone dressings, the walls are roughly quadrangular in shape, although part of the north-west side has been demolished. The walls stand approximately 4 meters high and feature weathered buttresses at regular intervals, which are set back at the corners, topped with a weathered stone coping.
The most prominent feature is the north-west gateway, which includes a large 4-centred archway topped by a gabled clock tower. This clock tower is adorned with gableted and weathered buttresses, mullioned windows, coped parapets, and an ornate finial. Each of the other sides has an entrance feature that includes a 4-centred arch doorway, buttresses, and a coped gable. Additionally, a corner octagonal ventilation shaft rises as an elaborate Gothic pinnacle with an arcaded stage.
