Description

The Cheadle War Memorial, located on High Street in Cheadle, Stockport, commemorates the soldiers who fell during the First and Second World Wars. Designed in the inter-war period by an unknown designer, it is made of white granite and features bronze plaques.

The memorial consists of a rough-hewn, rock-faced white granite obelisk that stands on a large, squared pedestal with tapering sides and a chamfered top. This pedestal is supported by a deeply chamfered plinth. On the front face of the pedestal, there is a bronze plaque bordered with a Greek key design. This plaque features a relief inscription that reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE / OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1919," accompanied by a relief laurel wreath with the name "CHEADLE" in the center. Below this, the inscription includes Psalm 102, verse 18: "THIS SHALL BE WRITTEN FOR THOSE THAT COME AFTER AND THE / PEOPLE WHICH SHALL BE BORN SHALL PRAISE THE LORD."

The left and right faces of the pedestal each display a large, inset, rectangular bronze plaque with a Greek key border that lists the names of the men who died in the First World War in raised lettering. The rear face features a similar bronze plaque that records those who died in the Second World War, including eight names under the title "AIR RAID VICTIMS."

Surrounding the memorial is a low, square fence made of rough-hewn granite posts at each corner, with lower central posts linked by chains.
