Description

Whitebottom Farm is a farmhouse dated 1690, as indicated by the lintel above the main entrance. It is constructed of coursed rubble sandstone and features a slate gable-end roof with stone coping. The building has a three-room range with a rear wing that contains a stair, forming an overall L-plan. The doorway leads into a cross passage, with the stack backing onto the passage and heating the lower end, which is an unusual arrangement.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a three-window front range. Each upper window is set under a stone-coped gable with kneelers and shows evidence of mullions that have since been removed. The hall and downhouse feature ground floor windows with three and four lights, while the inner room to the left has a modern casement window inserted. The right-hand return has a three-light mullioned window on each floor, although the mullions have been removed from the first floor. The rear of the wing is similar, with mullions also removed from the first floor. Casements have been inserted into what are believed to be early or original window openings at the rear of the main range.

To the left, a low extension has been replaced by a new stone-clad storeyed extension that was under construction at the time of the survey visit in 1989. The interior has not been inspected, but it is understood to contain a splat baluster staircase and other features.
