Description

The Church Houses, along with the Post Office, are a group of houses dating to 1835-6, built for the Andrew family. They are constructed of dressed stone with a graduated stone slate roof and ashlar dressings. The building is arranged as two blocks of six bays each, forming a double-depth house, now divided into three separate houses and incorporating a post office. A small wing extends to the rear. Access to the post office is at basement level, located in the right-hand gable. A stone plinth runs along the base of the building. Doorways are situated in bays three and five, each featuring a chamfered surround, hoodmould, and an overlight with marginal glazing bars. The ground floor has four windows, and the first floor has six, all with two lights, a double-chamfered stone mullion, a hoodmould, and glazing bars. Four chimney stacks are visible. A lean-to extension is attached to the left-hand gable. Sash windows are present at the rear, while the right-hand gable has 20th-century replacement windows. The Andrew family occupied the property for much of the 19th century.
