Description
The Church of St Thomas the Apostle is a Grade II listed building located on Church Road in Mellor. The church features a tower dating from the 15th century built on 12th-century foundations, while the rest of the structure was rebuilt in the early 19th century. The tower is constructed of coursed rubble, with the remainder of the church built from watershot stone and ashlar dressings.
The church has a nave with a west tower, a porch, and a chancel, which previously included a three-sided gallery. The nave consists of four bays with round-headed windows, while the chancel has one bay with pointed windows, all featuring impost blocks and keystones. The porch, located between the third and fourth bays, has a segmental-headed doorway, a commemorative plaque from 1815, a round-headed window, and a coped gable with kneelers. The east window is pointed-arch with a keystone.
The three-stage tower includes a 17th-century door surround set within a 15th-century arch, diagonal weathered buttresses, quoins, and a castellated parapet adorned with enriched finials. The west window features a 15th-century mullion and transom, along with two-light belfry openings and clock faces.
Inside, there is a pointed tower arch, three box pews, and an Anglo-Saxon drum-shaped font with crude carvings depicting a man on horseback. The early 14th-century pulpit, carved from a single piece of oak, has traceried panels and was restored in the 19th century. The church also contains stained glass from the late 19th century.
