Description

Mellor Hall and Mellor Hall Farmhouse is a house and adjoining smithy, now functioning as a farmhouse, possibly built around 1688, with the farmhouse dated "IC 1691". The structure features ashlar stonework with a graduated stone slate roof and dressed stone for the farmhouse, which has a slate roof. The building has 7 by 2 bays and stands two storeys high, with a central hall and staircase flanked by two rear wings. It has a stone plinth, rusticated stone quoins, bands at the first and second floors, a modillion eaves cornice, and a steep hipped roof. The central entrance features a door with a steep broken swan-neck pediment and a coat of arms, while the door jamb is dated 181?.

On the ground floor, there are six windows with 2-light ogee mullions and transoms, marginal glazing bars, and keystones. The first floor has seven sash windows with marginal glazing bars, cyma-moulded surrounds, and keystones. There are two ornate lead hopper heads with brackets for the downpipes. An added bay to the right has stone quoins, a coped gable with kneelers, and a prominent chimney stack. One of the rear wings features quoins, mullion and transom windows, a modillion eaves cornice, and a hipped roof, while the other wing has a 4-light double-chamfered stone mullion window, four 2-light mullion and transom windows, and a coped gable with kneelers.

The farmhouse continues from the latter wing, comprising three bays and two storeys with a rear wing. It has stone quoins, coped gables with kneelers, and a central chimney stack. The left side features a 2-light double-chamfered mullion window, a chamfered central door surround, and a blocked opening for the smithy on the right. The first floor has a central 1-light window and two 3-light flat-faced mullion windows under coped dormer gables with kneelers, one of which contains the datestone. The rear of the farmhouse includes a patio window and a raised roofline. The interior of the hall was not inspected, but the smithy contains a massive hearth with a segmental keystone arch.
