Description

The Old Birtle is a farmhouse dating from 1671. It is constructed of coursed rubble with stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The original 2-unit plan features a door opening into the house on the right, with a rear outshut, and a heated parlour to the left.

The front elevation has two storeys and incorporates a 4-light window, a doorway, a 5-light window, and a 2-light "fire window" on the ground floor, all with double-chamfered mullions and a continuous hoodmould. The upper floor has two 4-light windows (each with two mullions removed) and one 1-light window, with flush chamfered mullions. The eaves line has been raised by two courses, except at the left-hand extreme where a diagonally set chimney shaft with a stone cornice rises at the corner. A second stack is located as a ridge stack along the centre of the roof. Other external details include stone quoins, a stone plinth, and a coped gable.

Inside, the farmhouse retains chamfered oak beams and a large bressumer beam supported by moulded corbel. A bressumer beam corbel is dated 1671.
