Description

Smethurst Hall is a building of various dates, ranging from the 20th century back to possibly the 16th century. Originally a detached hall, it was divided into three sections in the 20th century. The structure is made of coursed squared rubble and stands two storeys tall. The left-hand section is a cross-wing, likely dating mainly from the late 17th century or early 18th century, featuring two stone mullioned windows, with an additional window in the gable and a 20th-century porch below the right-hand window. The central section, which is rendered and has a very steep roof, may be essentially from the 16th century and contains two modernized windows, along with 19th-century moulded-panel doors to the left. The larger right-hand section, probably from the late 19th century, has three windows that were formerly sashes, with the right-hand window set in a projecting gable and a door located below the middle window. There is a 20th-century pentice addition on the far left. The rear of the left-hand section features two three-light stone mullioned windows from the 17th or early 18th century. The Meadowcroft family is recorded as living at Smethurst in 1581. John Taylor made alterations to the building, which were commemorated by a tablet inscribed "T/IM/1756," although this has since been removed.
