Description

Providence United Reformed Church is a chapel built between 1859 and 1860. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof. The building features a four-sided gallery plan and a gable-pedimented elevation with a projecting plinth, a first-floor sill band, rusticated quoins, and paired entrances. The entrance includes six-panel doors with fanlights and an entablature on flat pilasters. There are segment-headed windows on either side and four round-arched windows on the first floor, which are adorned with pilasters, keystones, and circular tracery. The pediment displays elementary brick modillions, a polychromatic brick pattern, and a central oculus with mouchette tracery and an arabesque surround. The side elevations have six bays with similar windows on two levels and an eaves cornice.

Inside, the church is virtually complete, featuring a panelled gallery parapet that sweeps around at each end and is supported by cast-iron columns. The box pews follow a similar curve in the gallery. An organ chamber is located in an arched recess behind a tall panelled pulpit, which is approached by opposing steps with cast-iron railings. The interior retains many interesting features, including the original hymn number board, a plaster ceiling and cornice, early 20th-century light fittings, and leaded glass.
