Description
The Royal Bank of Scotland, originally the Manchester and Salford Bank, is a bank building dating from 1892, designed by Edgar Wood. It is constructed of buff-coloured terracotta and features a clay tile roof. The building has three bays and three storeys. A panelled round-arched door is located between the second and third bays, topped with a blocked archivolt and a coat of arms. On the ground floor, there are three 3-light mullion and transom windows with basket arches set within segmental recesses, along with secondary doors at the extreme left and right. The first and second floors feature similar 4-light windows, with the second-floor windows set within bold gabled dormers. All windows are fitted with leaded lights. The gabled dormers are closely spaced, with the roof plane continuing down to a deep eaves projection. Elaborate rainwater heads with rosette motifs and flamboyant brackets direct rainwater to a trough at first-floor sill level, which is adorned with bead-and-reel enrichment and channels water to an internal drain. The building also has bold ridge chimney stacks. The rear is constructed of brick and partly rendered. Inside, various features reflect Art Nouveau influence, including high-quality timber fittings, panelled doors with carved roundels above, and brass ironmongery.
