Description
The Old Rectory is an early 16th-century open-hall house that was floored over in the 16th century. It was faced and partly rebuilt in brick during the mid-19th century and underwent significant alterations around 1965. Much of the original timber-framed structure remains encased in brick, and it features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has a 5-bay, 2-storey elevation with a projecting plinth.
The entrance includes a panelled door in the fourth bay, which has a moulded surround, overlight, and a Gothic revival gabled porch. To the left, there are two 3-light mullion and transom windows, while the first floor has four sash windows. There is a single-storey wing to the left, and the fifth bay was virtually rebuilt in 1965.
Inside, a significant portion of the close-studded timber framing survives on a brick plinth believed to date from around 1520. The cross-frame at the north end of the original hall rises through two storeys, with less complete framing on the south and west sides. One of the studs features a carved colonnette. The inserted floor, notched onto the rails at first floor level, consists of heavily moulded beams, cross-beams, and joists. The entrance hall and drawing room are fully panelled, showcasing 16th-century linen-fold panelling with a briar frieze. Additionally, there are 17th-century carved cupboards, a fireplace, and an overmantel, with part of the fireplace dating to 1894, all elaborately carved.
