Description
Penknap Providence Church is a chapel built in 1840, as indicated by the date on the lunette above the entrance. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a Welsh slate roof with coped verges and a brick stack at the rear gable. The building is two storeys high with a three-window front. The central entrance consists of 20th-century double doors set in a pointed stone surround, flanked by pointed windows with Y-glazing bars and diamond leading. The gallery floor includes three pointed windows with Y-glazing bars, and there is a dentilled brick string course at the gable, which also has a lunette with an inscribed surround. The left and right sides of the church have four pointed windows with Y-glazing bars on both the ground and gallery floors. The rear of the church has an attached vestry and schoolroom; the left side retains a small 16-pane sash window, while the rest features 20th-century windows and raised eaves. Inside, the church has a gallery supported by cast-iron columns on the east, north, and south sides, along with 19th-century pews.
