Description

The Church of St. James is a Grade II listed church built in 1870 by G. Shaw of Saddleworth. It is constructed from rock-faced stone and features a slate roof. The church has a nave and chancel, with a north aisle and a central south tower that is flanked by a south chapel, all designed in the Gothic revival style. The six-bay aisle includes a projecting plinth and shaped eaves gutter brackets, while the west window has four lights. The gables are coped and topped with cross finials, and there is a bellcote situated between the nave and chancel. The three-bay chancel features a priest's door and a five-light east window. The south chapel consists of two bays and has a coped parapet decorated with mouchette motifs. The three-stage tower is supported by diagonal buttresses and includes a circular corner stair turret. Each stage of the tower decreases in size, and the steeple connects to an upper octagon through broaches. Inside, much of the aisle and chapel has been partitioned off. The nave arcade arches are chamfered and rest on alternating octagonal and circular columns with moulded heads and bases. The roof features arch-braced trusses, and there is stained glass present in the church.
