Description
The southern entrance of the railway tunnel beneath Todmorden Road is a tunnel entrance built in 1839, designed by engineer George Stephenson for the Manchester Leeds Railway Company. It features rock-faced stone and ashlar construction. The entrance is marked by a segmental keystone arch, flanked by battered piers that rise above the level of the coped parapet retaining wall, which sits on a continuous band. Above the parapet, there is a centrally-placed datestone, which is the only location along the entire railway line that displays the emblem of the Railway Company.
