Description

The southern entrance to the Summit Railway Tunnel, opened in 1841 by the Manchester Leeds Railway Company and engineered by George Stephenson, is a Grade II listed structure. It features a combination of ashlar and rock-faced stone. The entrance is designed with a horseshoe arch that has radial rustication on the voussoirs. At parapet level, there are two bold bands that enhance its architectural detail.
