Description

Lock No. 39 on the Rochdale Canal was built between 1794 and 1798, designed by engineer William Jessop. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features double upper gates, along with recesses for two sets of lower gates to accommodate two barge lengths, although neither set of lower gates exists today, and only one was ever fitted. The winding gear is still present, and the retaining wall at the lower end includes steps for boatmen.
