Description
Higher Cross Farmhouse and the adjoining barn are located on the west side of Higher Cross Lane in Saddleworth. The farmhouse dates back to 1746, as indicated by the inscription "WRER 1746" on the door lintel. It is constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys high, with the barn added later to the left side. The farmhouse displays quoins, and the door that is now on the left was originally located on the right gable.
The ground floor includes three 4-light and one 2-light double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullion windows, while the first floor has two similar 4-light windows, with a small window inserted to the right. The eaves are supported by shaped gutter brackets, and there is a ridge chimney stack. At the rear, there are 12-pane sash windows. The barn also features quoins, a segmental-headed cart entry with a dressed surround, and a shippon door to the left.
