Description
Stoneleigh is a house built around 1850 for Joseph Cooper. It is constructed from watershot hammer-dressed stone and features a slate roof. The building has a double-depth central-staircase plan and stands two storeys tall with three bays. It includes rusticated quoins, an ashlar plinth, a first-floor band, a first-floor sill band, an eaves cornice, and a hipped roof.
Broad steps lead up to a wide central doorway, which has side panels and a fanlight set under a depressed arch with rusticated voussoirs and a keystone. On either side of the doorway are canted bay windows that date from the late 19th century. The first-floor windows are surrounded by architraves, with the outer windows featuring triangular pediments on console brackets, while the central window has a segmental pediment. Below the sills of the outer windows are aprons with flanking console brackets, and the center has blind balustrading. The blocking course above has blind piercing and articulating dies. All sash windows are without glazing bars, and there is a tall arched stair window at the rear. A flat-roofed 20th-century addition has been made to the rear of the house.
