Description

Haywards Building is a shop with offices above, built in the mid to late 19th century. It features a rectangular plan that runs at right angles to the street and is designed in an eclectic style. The building stands four storeys tall with three-and-a-half bays, including a half-bay on the left. The ground floor has banded piers, and there is an enriched sill-band at the first floor. The left bay slightly projects from this level, and there are giant pilasters on the other bays. Panels are present between the first and second floors, and the full bays have dentilled friezes, an enriched frieze above, and a prominent cornice topped with a balustraded parapet.

The ground floor features three wide semi-elliptical arches with figured keystones, two of which have lettered glass bands that read "T.HAYWARD & CO GLASS & CHINA." These arches are filled with glazed screens, and there is a round-headed doorway to the left, which now contains a 20th-century door, along with a stone balcony above the window. The first floor has large round-headed arches with imposts and enriched keystones, which contain coupled round-headed windows. On the second and third floors, each bay (except for the half bay) has two windows; the second-floor windows are round-headed with set-in shafts and enriched moulded heads, while the third-floor windows are segmental-headed with moulded architraves and raised moulded sills. The interior of the ground floor has been altered, and the building was not inspected further.
