Description
Blackfriars Bridge is a public road bridge built around 1820, located on Blackfriars Street in Manchester. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features three spans in a Classical style. The bridge has three semicircular arches, with the eastern end partially embedded in the river bank. The arches are adorned with vermiculated rusticated voussoirs, triangular cutwaters, and low piers that have rounded ends. From these piers rise pairs of Ionic semicolumns, supporting a plain frieze and a dentilled cornice that projects forward over the columns. In the 20th century, the original parapet was replaced with tubular iron railings, which were further updated to stone-clad reinforced concrete in 1991.
