Description

Arkwright House is a building located in Manchester, constructed in 1929 by Harry S. Fairhurst. Originally designed as offices, it now serves as a restaurant and office space. The structure features a steel frame with Portland stone cladding and has a large trapeziform plan on an island site, showcasing a Neo-classical style.

The building stands five storeys tall, plus two attic storeys, and is divided into a 1:14:1 bay arrangement, with the end bays set back. The first two storeys of the main range create a podium for a three-storey order of giant Corinthian-style pilasters, which are topped with a plain frieze and a dentilled cornice. Above this, the two attic storeys are set back and finished with a frieze, cornice, and blocking course.

The ground floor features banded rustication and an arcade of round-headed windows with stepped voussoirs. The first floor and the first attic storey have 2-light mullioned windows, while the three floors of the pilastrade are adorned with bronze-framed 3-light windows, which include ornamental panels between the floors. The upper attic storey has simple 1-light windows. The return elevations are similar to the main facade but include two columns in antis.
