Description

Mansfield Chambers is a shop with offices above, likely built in the late 19th century and altered since. The building features stucco on brick, with stone and stone-imitating fibre-glass dressings, and has a concealed roof. It is designed in an Italianate style and has four storeys with five bays, the first bay being narrower and slightly set back. The ground and first floors have a four-bay giant arcade, with the first floor treated as a mezzanine. This arcade includes pilasters (partly or wholly made of fibre-glass), a frieze, and a moulded cornice. The third floor is low, featuring a sill-band and frieze, topped by a modillioned cornice and a pilastered parapet adorned with urns. The arcade has 20th-century shop fronts at the ground floor and semi-circular windows above. The narrow bay on the left has a doorway with 20th-century doors, a rectangular overlight, a frieze inscribed "MANSFIELD CHAMBERS," and a segmental pediment on long fluted consoles. Above this, there is a round-headed two-light window with circular tracery. The second floor features round-headed sashes within moulded architraves that have swags and cornices, while the third floor has short sashed windows. Three chimneys are visible above the parapet. The interior has not been inspected.
