Description
2 and 4 Palfrey Place are a pair of town houses built in the early to mid 19th century, with some alterations. They are constructed of stucco on brick and have a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted, featuring separate back extensions. The buildings rise three storeys above cellars and have three windows on each floor. The ground floor has channelled rusticated stucco, a sill band on the first floor, plain corner pilasters, and a plain frieze. The doorways are located to the right and accessed by long flights of steps, which are sheltered by porches supported by Doric columns and pilasters, complete with entablatures and cornices. The doors are panelled and glazed, topped with rectangular fanlights. The tall windows on the ground and first floors are complemented by shorter windows on the second floor, with the first and second-floor windows featuring moulded architraves, although all have altered glazing. There is a ridge chimney stack at the junction and a gable chimney stack to the left. The rear and interior of the houses were not inspected. These stylish town houses highlight the significance of Ardwick as a desirable residential area for the local gentry and successful tradesmen in Manchester.
