Description

The Apollo Theatre is a cinema that has been converted into a concert hall, built around 1930. It features red brick in Flemish bond, with a facade made of white glazed terracotta and a concealed roof. The building has a large rectangular plan with rounded front corners and a wing attached to the rear left corner, showcasing a modernist style. It consists of two unequal storeys plus an attic.

The wide, slightly raised rectangular centre has large tripartite openings on both floors; the ground floor contains ranges of doors, while the upper floor features large recessed rectangular windows with small-pane glazing. These are flanked by vertical panels adorned with Art Deco ornament. The convex corners of the building have small oblong windows on two levels, above which are three tiers of oblong slit windows set between raised bands—paired on the left corner and single on the right.

The slightly set-back attic storey corresponds to the tripartite openings below and includes banded pilasters, small oblong windows, and a raised parapet. The wings of the attic have plain cornices and parapets interrupted by broad stepped and moulded pilasters that match the ornamented panels below, along with slit windows at the corners. The return sides of the building are plainer.

Inside, the auditorium remains largely unaltered and features Art Deco decoration, including a horseshoe gallery with sweeping lines that lead to four overlapping tiers of "boxes." Between these tiers and the proscenium is a plunging V-shaped band.
