Description
The Former Church of St Thomas, located in Ardwick, Manchester, is a church that has been converted into a community services centre. It was originally built in 1741, widened in 1777, and extended eastwards in 1831, with a tower added in 1836 by William Hayley. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring some sandstone dressings, and has a rectangular plan with a west porch and tower.
The church exhibits a simple Georgian style, highlighted by an Italian campanile tower. It has a two-storey nave with seven windows (originally five, with two added later), rusticated quoins, a moulded cornice, and a brick parapet with stone coping. The round-headed windows on both floors have raised stone sills and small imposts; the first-floor windows feature Y-tracery, while the ground-floor windows have been altered.
At the west end, there is a shallow rectangular addition with a projecting square tower that matches the quoins and has a modillioned cornice that extends around the tower. The base of the tower has a round-headed west doorway with impost bands, and the first floor features narrow arcaded round-headed windows with linking imposts. The tower consists of three stages above the cornice: the first stage has slit windows in arcaded blank arches, the second stage has similar arcades on the front and clock faces on the sides, and the top stage features a three-light open-arcaded belfry, a prominent cornice, and a pyramidal roof topped with a weathervane finial. The interior has not been inspected.
