Description
The war memorial, located in Ardwick Green Park, was built in the early 1920s and is made of Portland stone. It has a square section and is raised on a base of three steps. The plinth features a sphinx with the word "EGYPT" inscribed on it. Above this, there is a tall square pedestal adorned with inscriptions and festoons, which is supported at the corners by Ionic columns. The entablature includes a lettered frieze and a dentilled cornice topped with a scrolled blocking course. The north side of the pedestal is inscribed with "GLORIOUS MEMORY OF MEMBERS OF THE 8TH (ARDWICK) BATTALION MANCHESTER REGIMENT (etc) 1914-1918," while the west side commemorates the years 1939-1945 with similar lettering. The frieze features raised lettering, including "FLANDERS" on the north side and "EGYPT" on the west side.
