Description
Numbers 1 to 5 on Central Street, which also includes No. 7 Southmill Street, is likely a former warehouse that later served as a Post Office and is now used as offices. It was built in the mid to late 19th century and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a concealed roof. It has a long rectangular shape and features a simplified palazzo style.
The structure consists of four storeys and a basement, with a facade that has 16 bays arranged in a very regular pattern. The ground floor is arcaded with round-headed arches supported by coupled piers, featuring moulded imposts and keyed moulded heads. The arches contain segmental-headed windows in the basement and round-headed sash windows on the ground floor, except for the eighth arch, which is a doorway, the tenth arch, which has an inserted doorway, and the last arch, which is a waggon arch. The upper floors have recessed segmental-headed sashes without glazing bars, all framed with moulded surrounds and stilted hoodmoulds with keystones. The left return wall at No. 7 Southmill Street matches the style of the main facade and has four bays. The interior has not been inspected.
