Description

Lancashire House, located at No.47 Peter Street and including No.9 Southmill Street, is a building that likely served as a merchant's warehouse and is now used as a betting shop and offices. It was constructed around 1860 to 1870 and has undergone some alterations. The ground floor is finished in sandstone ashlar, while the upper levels are made of red brick with sandstone dressings. The building has a rectangular plan and is situated on a corner site, featuring four storeys and a basement.

On Peter Street, there are four bays, and on Southmill Street, there are nine bays. The basement and ground floor of the front and the first bay of the return side have been altered for shop use, but the Southmill Street facade retains its sandstone ashlar finish, complete with a plinth, raised rusticated bands, and a plain frieze. The windows are sashed without glazing bars, and there is a segmental-headed doorway in the third bay with an enriched surround.

The upper floors feature a bracketed cornice above the first floor, with sill and head bands on the third floor, and a dentilled and modillioned cornice that wraps around the building. All windows on the upper floors are sashed without glazing bars, with the first and third floors having moulded architraves, while the second floor windows are round-headed with hoodmoulds and a linking impost band. The corner of the building is narrow and chamfered, and it is slightly set back. The interior has not been inspected. Lancashire House forms a group with No.37 (Harvester House) on the opposite corner of Southmill Street.
