Description
Carlton House, located in Albert Square, Manchester, is a former club and offices built in 1872 by Clegg and Knowles. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan and is designed in a Free Venetian Gothic style. The structure consists of a basement and four storeys, plus an attic, with four unequal bays. The outer bays have three-storey canted oriels, and there is a bracketed cornice along the top, with gabled attic dormers above the oriels.
The main entrance is a two-centred arched doorway located in the third bay, which includes a trefoil intrados, shafts, and imposts adorned with knobbly foliation. The building has sashed windows arranged in groups of 3:3:2:3, featuring various styles such as segmental-pointed, shouldered, trefoiled, and square-headed, along with decorative elements like shafts with foliated caps and carved panelled aprons. The interior was not inspected. Historically, Carlton House served as the offices of the Bridgewater Canal Company and was also the premises of the Manchester Arts Club.
