Description

Albert Chambers is a former office building located in Manchester, constructed in 1873 by the architects Clegg and Knowles for the Manchester Corporation Gasworks. The building is made of sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof, with a rectangular plan and a Venetian style. It has a basement and four storeys, with a five-window facade that is horizontally divided between the first and second floors. The lower section is designed as a regular five-bay arcade of round-headed arches supported by pilasters with carved caps. The upper section contains windows arranged in a 1:4:1 grouping within panels, each adorned with a Lombard frieze, topped with a moulded cornice and an embattled parapet.

The doorway in the fifth bay is notable for its lion-mask brackets supporting the lintel, a semicircular fanlight, and a two-centred arched extrados. The carved tympanum features a mask, lion, and unicorn. The windows throughout the building are sash style without glazing bars. The ground floor windows are segmental-headed, while those on the first floor are round-headed with foliated sills, imposts, and hoodmoulds. The three-bay center on the second floor has a prominent sill supported by brackets, and most of the windows above the first floor have rounded trefoil heads, except for the square-headed windows in the center of the second floor, which have shafts with foliated caps. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the building was formerly occupied by the Manchester School of Music.
