Description

This is a directional signpost located on Starling Road, dating from the early 19th century. It is associated with the Radcliffe Moor Turnpike Trust, which was established in 1836. The signpost is made of low stone and has a triangular section, painted white. The two outward faces feature carved inscriptions and images of pointing hands. The left side reads 'Radcliffe/To Manchester/to Blackburn', while the right side states 'To Bury/to Harwood and Bolton'. This signpost is an example of early 19th-century vernacular quality, predating the manufactured street furniture that became common in the mid-19th century and later.
