Description
The sign post at the junction with Bradford to Harrogate Road dates from 1743 and is made of gritstone. It stands approximately 1.20 metres high and has a square section. The east face features the inscription 'The Road To (Br)adford ( ) Miles' with a hand pointing south above it. The north face displays 'The Road To Otley ( ) Miles' with a hand pointing west above, and 'The Road to Knaresborough ( ) Miles' with a hand pointing east. This sign post was erected when the ford over the River Wharfe at Castley was the main route for traffic traveling to Bradford from Harrogate. It likely became defaced when the ford fell out of use in the late 19th century.
