Description
High Crompton Farmhouse is a building likely dating from the 17th century, constructed from coursed rubble. It has two storeys and features three casement windows with moulded mullions, including a left-hand window with four lights, a middle window with four lights above (though one mullion is lost) and five lights on the ground floor (with two lost mullions), and a right-hand single-light window. Below the right-hand window is an early ledged door set beneath a massive, slightly arched lintel. The building has flush quoins, and the front pitch of the roof is covered with stone slabs. There are gable chimneys, and an addition on the right side, likely also from the 17th century, has no window on the front but features a blocked opening on the first floor, which may have served as a corn store, while the ground floor likely functioned as a dairy. Additional mullioned windows can be found on other sides of the building. A mid-rear wing, which probably contains the stair, is likely a later addition. The interior includes a large cross beam, a partition opposite the hearth with flat-arched doors at each end that have strap hinges, and two enormous curved tie beams on the first floor.
