BOLTON

SD61SE CHURCH ROAD 797-1/1/67 (South side) 26/04/74 St Peter's Jubilee Sunday School

II

Sunday School. 1811, for Richard Ainsworth. Coursed and squared stone with ashlar dressings and stone flagged roof. EXTERIOR AND PLAN: 2 storeys, 9-window range forming an asymmetrical composition, 5-2-2, with off-centre advanced pedimented bay, and right-hand section originally the school master's house with rusticated quoins, a band over the ground floor openings and a moulded gutter cornice. Doorways to left and adjacent to pedimented section, both with wrought-iron fanlights. Wood mullioned and transomed windows with wedge lintels. Inscription (now badly worn) in pediment which reads, "..accession of his magesty KING GEORGE the IIId to the throne of these realms.". A series of buttresses to the front wall were possibly added shortly after construction. Short parallel rear wing of brick and stone a later addition. INTERIOR: apparently remodelled during the later C19, and the roof over the first-floor hall, with timber arched braces and raking struts, and wrought-iron braces and kingposts, apparently of this period.
