Description

The chimney at the junction with Moss Lane is a brick structure dated 1863. It is octagonal in shape, tapering towards the top, and features a moulded cap. This chimney was part of the power system for the nearby Halliwell Bleach Works, which were established by Peter Ainsworth in 1739. The works gained a notable reputation in the early 19th century for their innovative use of chlorine gas in the bleaching process, overseen by Richard Ainsworth. Today, the chimney stands as the main surviving remnant of the bleach works.
