Description
Smithills Coaching House is a former coach house and stables with a coachman's cottage, converted to residential use after 2012. It was built around 1875, likely by the architect Devey, who made alterations to the nearby Smithills Hall, which this coach house served. The building features coursed and squared rubble with some half-timbering in the gables and a stone flagged roof.
The plan is asymmetrical, with the former stables forming the rear range and the coachman's cottage projecting from the south-west. The entrance is located towards the left of the courtyard, featuring a four-centred archway with a triple timbered coved gable above. There is a single gable on the inner face with a clock at the apex and a cupola on the roof above. High-level mullioned windows are present in the external wall beneath the gables. The western range has a stepped roof with an ogival cupola on top. A blocked four-centred arch is located to the left, while a flat-roofed extension obscures other original features. A similar extension hides the arched entrances to the stable range to the north, with the arches now only visible from the inside. The angled eastern range retains some original mullioned windows with leaded lights on the first floor.
The former coachman's cottage to the south-west has a jettied timber-framed upper storey with a quatrefoil panelled band. It features a single mullioned window on each floor and a side entry to the west, which has been renewed. The interior has not been inspected.
