Description

This is a terrace of 19 houses located at 44-80 St George's Road in Bolton, built around 1820. The buildings are constructed of brick and topped with a slate roof. They appear to have been built as a single phase, following a common plan but featuring varying details.

The terrace is two storeys high and spans a range of 38 windows. The houses numbered 62 to 80 have segmentally arched doorways with recessed architraves, fluted shafts, and plain fanlights, with panelled doors that have mostly been replaced. They also feature canted bay windows with sash windows that have curved heads, some of which have been renewed. Above these, there are 12-pane sash windows, many renewed in their original openings, with wide splayed brick heads. Notably, No. 68 has a full-height canted bay window. The eaves cornice has been renewed for Nos 62-70.

Nos 44-60 are part of the same build but are slightly shorter. They share similar architectural details, including paired doorways for Nos 44-46 and bay windows for only six of the houses. The doors have eight fielded panels and are set in recessed architraves with reeded pilasters and fanlights, with wrought-iron tracery still visible in Nos 50 and 56. There is a flat entablature and overlight (renewed) above the paired doors of Nos 44 and 46. The houses feature 12-pane sash windows on both the ground and first floors, many of which have been renewed in their original openings with wide splayed heads. The end wall stacks are positioned at the front and rear of the ridge line. The interior has not been inspected.
