Description
A terrace of twelve houses at 38-60 Worcester Street, Gloucester, built in 1825 with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are now used as offices and flats. The facades of numbers 38 to 46 are rendered, while the others are of brick, with stone detailing. The roofs are slate and tiled, with flat-roofed and gabled dormers, and brick stacks. The houses are double-depth, with rear wings.
The exterior is three storeys high, with basements and attics, although numbers 38 to 44 are at a lower level and without attics. Stone bands are present at ground-floor level and at the first-floor sill level. There is a stone-coped parapet. Each house has a semicircular arched doorway to the left, several with original fanlights featuring radiating bars and six-panel doors; other doors have been replaced in the 20th century. To the right of each doorway is a wide sash window. The first floor of each house has two sashes, and the second floor has two sashes, mostly replaced in the later 19th or 20th centuries, although some houses retain original sashes with a 3x4 pane configuration. The sashes in the openings with rubbed brick flat arches at numbers 50 to 60 are original; number 54 retains all original sashes and its fanlight.
The interior was not inspected during the listing process. The terrace represents a substantially complete example of its type and date, being part of a group of buildings constructed in the 1820s along Worcester Street.
