Description

Horsemarket Chambers, located at Nos 46, 48, 48A, and 50, is a town house from the 18th century that has been extensively altered in the 19th century. The building features Flemish bond brickwork and a slate roof. The front facing Horsemarket Street consists of a row of late 19th-century shops with two upper stories, which were added to the original 18th-century structure.

The building is notable for the preservation of its 18th-century rear elevation, which includes a six-bay, three-storey facade. A central two-storey bay projects forward and is adorned on the second storey with a stone-mullioned Venetian window featuring a Doric entablature and glazed with 19th-century sheet glass. In the angle between the projecting bay and the main elevation is an 18th-century stone doorcase, which may have been relocated during the 19th-century alterations. This entrance features an open-pedimented round-headed door case with Doric fluted necking on the jambs, although the segmented fan-light and door have both been replaced.

Next to the projecting bay is an octagonal two-storey wing that has been extensively altered at ground level and partly rebuilt above, but it retains its original stone sills and 12-pane sash windows on the second storey. From the original main three-storey elevation, only the 12-pane sashes on the second storey and the 9-pane sashes on the third storey in the first and second bays remain. The ground floor has undergone significant changes, and the attached 20th-century toilet block is not of special architectural or historic interest. The eaves feature dentilled consoles that extend the full length of the rear roofline. The interior has not been inspected.
