Description
The Former Fish Market is a Grade II listed building made of cast iron, dating from the 19th century. It has a rectangular plan aligned north-south and features an open-sided canopy supported by six iron columns on both the east and west sides. These columns are connected by segmental arches adorned with ornamented spandrels. The eight columns on the southern side have foliated capitals, while the two northern columns are square and substantial, showcasing lion’s head, fruit, and foliage motifs within recessed panels. The gable ends to the north and south each include glazed roundels.
Inside, the space is entirely open and features a gabled roof supported by iron struts. Six large octagonal lanterns hang from the ceiling in staggered bays.
